Our Thoughts. They are powerful and control us more than we sometimes realize. 

The thoughts we keep in loop in the recorder of our minds are numerous. In fact, experts and studies have shown that we think somewhere in between 60,000 and 80,000 thoughts per day! 😳 That's an average of about 2500 thoughts per hour. Staggering isn't it. 

It would be wonderful if our Thoughts would be all good, but their not. Many are toxic and sometimes we're even embarrassed to have such thoughts. Rest assured that it's normal. 

For those of you who know the Bible, King David had EVIL thoughts and he's a highly respected child of the Almighty God!! He thought that instead of coming clean about sleeping with the soldiers wife, he would just have him killed. If DAVID can be forgiven, folks are we! Amen! 🙏

The good news is that we have a template, if you will, to use along side our Thoughts to align them with God's command. 

Philippians 4:8 is a great way to test the discernment of our Thoughts. 

Let's take a look at this verse, 

"Finally brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.

Now, let's break each one of these things down and see what they mean. 

True

One of the most important things to consider about our Thoughts is, are they true? To often I know the thoughts I have are not true. For example, I have told myself, "Geoff you must be stupid to think that!" If I was stupid, I would have drool running down my chin, and may talk like Moose in the Archie comics and say "Duh" a lot. That thought simply is FALSE!! 

Noble 

Because we are heirs to the kingdom of God, we're in the highest of ranks my friends!! Along side generals and admirals, we're top notch in the sight of God!! And not in a arrogant way but in allowing ourselves to not have that unclean or unkind thought. 

Right

This is a big one for me. I find that so many people (myself included) don't even realize how much we want to be right!! Or have to get the last word. What's the big deal if we're wrong once in a while? Humble yourself and let the other person get in a word or two. Admit that you aren't the most important thing in the conversation. 

"But often we don't permeate our thoughts. Thinking right thoughts means appropriateness and accuracy can be our leaders." 

Pure

To be pure in thought and deed isn't as mysterious as we think. It's simply CHOOSING TO think in a ethical manner. For example, would you bring up the UFC fight during prayer? Or talk about sex with your parents at the dinner table when you were 15? Lol probably not..... (but if you did, don't worry, your not alone, nor does it change who you are) 

Lovely

"This is a word that isn't used much but it should be." 

To think lovely thoughts is to think about the beauty that surrounds us, a bird chirping, or a blooming flower. I love to see families at play with their kids. A grandparent holding his grandchild hand as they cross the street. 

To see the stunning life that is all around us, that's LOVELY!! 

Admirable 

To be admired is something most people want. However, this can be taken out of context if we're not careful. I'll explain this to you by presenting a situation that took place for me. I was talking to my girlfriend about how the older ladies admire me at my church. Well, she mistook it to mean that they desire me or like me in a sexual way. That isn't what I meant at all, thank goodness she did end up understanding what I meant. I meant they admire the hard work I put into getting clean and sober and surrendered my life to God. 

"Admirable thoughts are credible and distinguished and allow us to live in such a way that is commendable."

Excellent 

The best of the best is what excellent is. When our thoughts are excellent, they are superb, exceptional, and fabulous. Excellent thoughts lead us to live excellent lives.

Worthy of Praise 

What thoughts are worthy of praise? Thoughts about God. His ways, His plans, and His creation, to name a few. It’s safe to say that when our thoughts are on Him, that’s a good thing. 

The author ends this article by saying we can test our thoughts each day. It's up to you whether you want to deal with this or think it's just going to go away... 

Eventually we won't have to test our Thoughts because we will already know what is right in the eyes of God! 

We won't be able to address every thought that comes to mind but we can sure try to free our minds of toxic thoughts.
